Dental X-rays are a standard part of dental office visits and are essential for identifying issues with teeth beneath the surface of the gums. Although radiation risk from dental X-rays is low, excessive radiation exposure can increase the risk of developing cancer later in life. This is why the State of California requires dental assistants to complete a radiation safety course to minimize radiation exposure during routine dental procedures.
If you are becoming a dental assistant, completing a radiation safety course will allow you to perform X-rays and operate other radiographic equipment safely. Our Radiation Safety Course in Kingsburg can teach you to perform X-rays safely. The course is a total of 32 hours, with 24 hours in office and 8 hours at home study.

The State of California allows non-licensed or non-registered dental assistants to perform X-rays and operate radiography equipment after successfully completing a board-approved radiation safety course. This means that entry-level dental assistants who are not yet licensed or registered can perform X-rays and other radiographic imaging techniques if they have completed a radiation safety course approved by the Dental Board of California.
