Infection Control (8 HRS TOTAL= 2 HRS IN OFFICE+ 6 HRS HOME STUDY)
When: Monday – Thursday
Time: 2 HRS
Infection control is a crucial skill for dental assistants. Dental assisting involves regular, close contact with patients and, therefore, carries a high risk of infection for patients and healthcare providers. Because of this, dental assistants must learn infection control techniques during training and through continuing education.
The Dental Board of California requires all dental assistants in the state to complete a Board-approved eight-hour course in infection control. This requirement applies to both registered and unregistered dental assistants.
At Kingsburg School of Dental Assisting, our eight-hour Infection Control Course (2 hours in office/6 hours at home study) is Board-approved and will teach you essential concepts, principles, and practices to keep you and your patients safe from infections. If you are interested in any of our dental assisting courses, speak with our office today.
Infections in dental settings can spread in several ways. For instance, viruses that can cause the flu and other airborne illnesses are easily spread through coughing and sneezing in dental settings due to the close proximity between dental assistants and their patients. Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when dealing with patients helps prevent the spread of airborne diseases and reduces the likelihood that you and your patients get sick. It is also essential for dental assistants to learn proper coughing and sneezing etiquette to prevent the spread of germs to patients and coworkers.
Infections can also spread through bacteria that are found in the mouth. Bacteria are fast-growing organisms that can cause infections and severe illness. Since our mouths are an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, dentist assistants must carefully sterilize and disinfect all equipment after use to prevent bacteria from spreading.
Hand washing is the easiest and most effective way to control infections and keep your patients healthy. Soap is a disinfectant that has been proven to reliably kill viruses and bacteria when used properly. Dental assistants must learn proper hand-washing techniques to ensure that all areas of the hand, especially around the nails and nailbeds, have been thoroughly cleaned.
By learning proper infection control techniques through our course in Kingsburg, you can protect both your health and your patients’ health.
